Lessons from New Year

Yes I know it’s a bit late for this post but I am reposting some of my favourite posts from my old site. So here goes.

Last year was one of the hardest years of my life. I worked so hard that I barely had time to see my friends. Despite telling my patients about the benefits of a work life balance I found myself becoming addicted to work and the forever unachievable goals I set myself. It was only when I stopped all this and decided to take a break that I realised that the pressures I was putting on myself were unrealistic and my business is still here after three weeks of inaction. In fact I’d say my business is in a better state for this inaction. I’ve regained my energy and enthusiasm and given myself a much needed recharge. Against my better judgement I allowed another naturopath to convince me to start a detox a week before Christmas. This was my biggest mistake of the holidays. Not only was I unable to stick to the detox,it was a waste of my detox products. I am only human and enjoyment is an important part of the human condition. I knew I had a few parties to go to over the silly season and I made the judgement call to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine and indulge in some not so healthy food. And at the end of the day I am sure that I feel better for having had some fun. I’m not saying that a detox wouldn’t have done me the world of good, but that there’s a time and a place for everything. Cudos to those with stronger willpower than me. So what have I learnt from this? Well one, that I will time my detox to when I know I can stick to it, but it has helped me make this years new years resolution to be that I don’t need to be so tough on myself when it comes to work. I will make more time for my friends and family and ensure that I continue cooking healthy meals as I have been doing on holidays and not feeling guilty when I meet a friend for a catch up. It has also reminded me that alcohol is my worst enemy for productivity and health and that whilst it can be fun, I have to expect the consequence of a hangover. I will cherish my new year of getting back to my usual healthy lifestyle. Wishing you all a happy new year for 2014. x
