Affirmations

My first experience with affirmations was during my time in London when I shared a house with a lovely Danish girl named May Britt. I was at a particularly low point in my life and so in order to improve my state of well being the girl told me to repeat out loud every morning to myself in front of the mirror “I love you Tristian”. She believed when I loved myself, not only would I attract nice people and events into my life, I would also manage to sleep. As ridiculous as I felt saying the affirmation, I did witness some kind of an effect. I had a lot more attention from the opposite sex. Sleeping was unfortunately not a bi product, but it helped me stop looking in the mirror and seeing a tired and wrinkly monster.

Some years later I was given the book by Louise Hay “You Can Heal Your Life”. It teaches that for every ailment in the body, there’s a corresponding belief associated with it. By repeating a daily affirmation it supposedly rewires the thought process. The affirmation for insomnia is “I lovingly release the day and slip into peaceful sleep, knowing tomorrow will take care of itself”. It’s only now that I’m content that I find this affirmation to work.

For a while I chose about three affirmations from the book and I walked around repeatedly saying them.  My life did not change as much as I’d have hoped, though I don’t want to be too negative about this as some people swear by them. The key so they say is to truly believe what you are saying. It’s hard to believe you will slip into a peaceful sleep knowing that it hasn’t happened for the past ten years, but it’s worth a shot and the best thing about it is it’s free. Just don’t be like me and put it on a post it on the bathroom mirror and forget to take it off on a first date. I will never forget my embarrassment when this particular guy went to use the bathroom and came back and handed me the post it note wondering what on earth it was all about. Yes, affirmations are private and should be kept that way. What other people don’t know won’t hurt them.
